Django Seed Starter Project

Get started

Clone the repositry first, optionally choose a custom directory name, then create the Python environment, install dependencies, and apply the database migrations.

git clone https://github.com/sjmitch-git/django-seedster my-project
cd my-project

The final argument, my-project, is optional. Omit it to use the repository name automatically.

py -m venv .venv
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install -r requirements.txt
.\.venv\Scripts\python.exe manage.py migrate

Environment configuration

Create a .env file in the project root with your Django secret key:

DJANGO_SECRET_KEY=your-secret-key-here

Generate a secure secret key with Python:

.venv\Scripts\python.exe -c "from django.core.management.utils import get_random_secret_key; print(get_random_secret_key())"

Copy the output and update your .env file with the generated key.

Run the project

Install the frontend packages, then start Django from the project root.

npm install
npm run dev

The development site runs at http://127.0.0.1:8000/.

Tailwind CSS

Run the CSS watcher in a second terminal while editing templates or styles.

npm run watch:css
